Ethnic traditions in funeral service - East European family-Orthodox should not be taken lightly. Most east European families are eastern orthodox. This religion is descended from Orthodox Catholics and is very similar to it. The funeral rights are almost identical to the catholic funeral rights.

There are a few differences between Eastern Orthodox and the Catholic faith. One of the differences is their view on cremation. People who practice Eastern Orthodox believe that the body should be placed back into the earth. For this reason they use coffins and bury the bodies usually in cemeteries rather than cremate them.

They do however take organ donation very very seriously. They normally have someone witness the organ donor card signing. They believe that it is giving back to donate organs and help others even in death. This is taken from a section of the bible that states that people should give to others when ever that they can.

Several prayers are said over the dying and the dead in this religion. These prayers are to get the soul to depart the body to continue its journey. These are ordinarily accompanied by a vigil and a viewing. They prepare for death when someone is terminally ill rather than waiting until after they are gone.

Most of the time the funeral is held in an orthodox church. Flowers and other gifts might be given depending on the family's preference. They are given at any time during the morning period. It is important to give wreaths of flowers or gifts of food and help during this time. It is not appropriate to avoid giving gifts or help and is considered extremely rude.

If you are planning a funeral for someone who is Eastern Orthodox you should speak with the church on exact needs. They will be happy to speak with you and you do not want to do anything that will offend anyone especially at this trying time. It is important to observe all of the important practices when dealing with mourning relatives.
