Different folks like doing things differently and act in different ways. Some individuals like the outdoors, whereas others prefer staying indoors and studying an excellent book. One person might get pleasure from social gatherings and mingling with plenty of folks, whereas another would possibly like more intimate settings like having dinner with 1-2 special friends.

One technique to describe and understand these variations is through the concept of Personality. The MBTI is a well known assessment for insights into personality, which relies on the work of psychiatrist Carl Jung. As per the MBTI, a person's personality will be described by their preferences within the 4 areas given below:

Favorite world: Do you prefer to focus on the outer world or on your own internal world? This is called Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I).

Info: Do you favor to focus on the basic info you soak up through your senses and concentrate on the present or do you prefer to interpret and add meaning? This is referred to as Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N).

Choices: When making decisions, do you favor to first look at logic and consistency or first have a look at the individuals, feelings/emotions involved and special circumstances? This is called Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F).

Structure: In coping with the outside world, do you like to get issues decided or do you favor to remain open to new info and choices till the last moment? This isknown as Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P).

Based on your preferences for every area, you'll have a certain personality type, which is represented by four letters such as ENTJ. Every personality type is different and has different behaviours, strengths, development areas, likes, dislikes and so on.

Different personalities are also suited to different jobs. In case you are wondering what careers are ideal for you, based on your character, then "Do What You Are" is a good book for that.

Broadly, the book covers the following topics/structure:

1) Describing the various kinds of personalities (based on the MBTI)

2) Taking you through some exercises to reach your personality type

3) Explaining every personality type in detail, together with strengths, weaknesses, typical profession matches and a few case studies of profession selection/change

Whereas it's a good book and I do advocate shopping for it, there are just a few factors to note:

The book covers only one facet of profession choice and decision making. Therefore it's not complete and doesn't take into account different areas such as pursuits, expertise, values, goals, constraints and so on

It's not 100% sure that you'll arrive at an correct personality type via the book. So do not take every thing in there as though it's written in stone. If the content interests you and you need to get into extra detail, then think about speaking with a career counsellor.
